Tree preservation orders & Conservation area tree's

We offer a service to help you with your council applications for tree preservation order (TPO) or conservation areas tree's (should you need it).

Tree Crown Raising

Tree crown raising is simply removing branches from the bottom of the crown of a tree to provide clearance for pedestrians, vehicles, buildings, or lines of site. This technique somethimes also allows valuable sunlight for plant, hedge, grass life underneath the tree. Ideal this process should leave branches on at least two thirds of the tree's total height. For example, if you want to prune a tree that's 30 feet tall, you may only trim branches up 10 feet from the ground.

Tree Crown Thinning & Cleaning

Tree crown thinning is the selective removal of stems and branches to increase light penetration into your garden and allowing air movement throughout the crown of a tree. Tree pruning out the dead, rubbing branches as a plus for the tree health. This improves a tree's structure and form while making life uncomfortable for tree pests, especially for example fruit tree's.

Tree Crown Reduction

A pruning technique most often used when a tree has grown too large for its permitted space and reduced by a percentage. Other reasons such as to reduce wind resistance, water up-take, to allow more light through, to control the size of a tree in a restricted environment (Conservation Area or TPO) being better than completely taking the tree down. This method is preferred to topping because it results in a more natural, tidy, compact shape appearance while increasing the time before pruning is needed again and minimizes stress. Tree reductions are usually done to reduce the heightof the tree but, can be done all around the tree as the picture below shows.

 Hedge Care & Removal

All aspects of hedge work undertaken:

  - Hedge trimming to tidy.

  - Reducing the height or width.

  - Complete removal.

Tree Pollarding

A method of pruning that keeps trees smaller than they would naturally grow, normally started once a tree or shrub either reaches a certain height, out growing a space, taking up to much light or to prevent contact with electrical wires or streetlights. Re-pollarding (back to knucks/heads) is usually done annually, and would need to be carried out every few years to avoid potential problems. This method is often used in extreme circumstances or in managing tree's pollarded before. Local councils and tree surgeons / arborists will look at this method carefully (especially in conservation areas or tree's with TPO's on them), if not using it at all. Not done properly or to the correct tree's it can cause extensive decay (could happen anyway), threatening the tree's entire structure and would be similar to 'topping', which is not acceptable practice in some areas.

General Tree Pruning or Crown Cleaning of Deadwood

Tree maintenance is often needed because of health and safety reasons, sunlight issues, tree has out grown a space or just for tree health in general. Removal of the dead, diseased, dangerous (The 3 D's) or rubbing branches improves the tree's structure, form and done in the correct manner will keep the tree healthy and maintenance free for years to come.

Tree Felling/Removal

Tree removal is either done by felling the tree by the base in one go or by dismantling (section felling) the tree piece by piece in safe sections and sometimes using lowering rigging to achieve is safety. We use section felling a lot as usually the tree is in an area to small to fell in one go or there are objects to protect (e.g house, greenhouse).

The pictures below show a tree being section felled bit by bit. This also helps us load the heavy wood for removal.

Stump Grinding

Stump grinding service to remove the stump to approx. 1" to 6" below ground level, then adding stump / root killer (all depending upon request).

On smaller tree's, shrubs or hedge's the stumps and main roots can dig up by labour or a small digger if there is access.

Coppicing

A traditional method of woodland management which takes advantage of the fact that many trees reshoot from the stump or roots if cut down. In a coppiced wood young tree stems are repeatedly cut down to near ground level. In subsequent growth years, many new shoots will emerge, and after a number of years the coppiced tree, or stool, is ready to be harvested, and the cycle begins again.

Reduce your tree / shrubs to stump(s) and shape them as they grow back. Used for harvesting, a good source for fire wood and fence posts every 7-25 years or with hazel using to make wattle fences or growing poles (bean poles, etc).

Coppice cycle.
